Turpentine Trail

You'll find plenty of great trails in the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness, and the Turpentine Trail is no exception. The trailhead is located just past the Longleaf Vista Recreation Area on the Longleaf Scenic Byway. There are a few places to park here, but be prepared to drive a little further to the parking lot at the Caroline Dormon trailhead, then do a short road walk back.

You'll get a view of some really nice sandstone hills shortly after starting the trail. You'll also find some nice campsites on the hills to your right, so spend a couple of days exploring this unique to Louisiana landscape! The hills on the right also have an old roadbed that follows the hilltop and you can get some good views of the sunrise. You can also see the Longleaf Vista Recreation Area from here!

Out and Back

Continue down the trail and you'll enter a couple of groves of longleaf pine trees and connect with the Backbone Trail. If you parked at the Caroline Dormon parking lot, take the trail to your left and the Backbone Trail will lead you back to your car making this a nice 4-5 mile loop.
